Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer

Though the concept of using fat for an implant material has been around for a long time, its benefits have been reaffirmed in a recent surge in popularity. Fat can be taken from one part of the body and inserted into another to reverse volume deficiency. Popular procedures include increasing cheekbone contour, filling in facial defects, and buttocks augmentation. Increasing lip size and filling in wrinkles and acne scars are also popular uses. Candidates for fat transfer are healthy individuals who want to address a volume deficiency of some kind.

Dr. Goldschmidt is a leading specialist in these practices, providing cosmetic surgery in the Ohio area. Though the length of the procedure is frequently 2 to 4 hours, the process is commonly repeated until the desired results are achieved. This is needed because the body often digests the fat after the first insertion.

Through liposuction technology, fat is taken from the thigh, abdomen, or buttock area. Once the fat is washed and treated, it is either injected back into the desired location or frozen to be used at a later date. Since fat is living tissue, it survives through the procedure and in the new location. The additional fat feels totally natural to the patient.

Patients commonly experience discomfort, pain, and bruising. However, within a few days patients can return to normal routine. Complications are very infrequent and there is very little risk for infection. Patients may notice slight asymmetry in the treated area. This is temporary and will look normal after swelling goes down.
