Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Surgery
Should I Go Above Or Below The Muscle?
Dr. Goldschmidt can place breast implants above or below the pectoral muscle. Most implants are placed under the muscle because it comes with a lower rate of capsular contracture and is unlikely to show rippling. However, this placement is not ideal for every patient. The basic placements include:
- Subglandular: The implant is placed beneath the breast glands, but above the chest muscle. This placement looks best on women with a good amount of existing breast tissue.
- Subfascial: The breast implant is placed underneath the lining of the muscle, but not under the muscle. This can work on several body types and adequately hides wrinkling for petite patients.
- Submuscular: The breast implant is placed underneath the chest muscle. Maintains an extremely natural look and feel and does not disrupt mammograms.
Do Breast Implants Feel Real?
Yes, once the breasts heal and the implants settle, they usually feel exceptionally real. Oftentimes, the patient themselves cannot feel the implant. The breast implants will feel the most natural when placed under the muscle, but a silicone implant in any position can look and feel natural.
What Can Columbus Breast Augmentation Patients Expect For Scarring?
Breast augmentation normally does not require large scars. Even the largest silicone implants can be inserted through an incision that is only a few inches. Dr. Goldschmidt can place most breast implants through a four centimeter incision. Saline implants—since they are placed into the breast empty—only a tiny incision is required.
Otherwise, scarring is well hidden either in the inframammary fold, at the edge of the areola, or in the armpit. Scars also will fade with time.
Does Breast Augmentation Affect Breastfeeding?
Not usually, but if this is a concern for you, Dr. Goldschmidt can place your breast implants through the armpit or other position far from the glands of the breast to ensure breastfeeding capability is maintained. The periareolar technique carries the most risk to future breastfeeding ability. Other incision areas pose very little risk.
